SELECTED BY MICHAEL SHONK:
As a fan of John Barry and his Bond work especially, I enjoy this album. Based on a book by Len Deighton and featuring a nameless spy (who would become know as Harry Palmer due to this film), the movie starred Michael Caine, and was directed by Sidney J. Furie. The producer was one of the Bond producers, Harry Saltzman.

I’m a big fan of John Barry’s music. He’s a very underrated composer.

He was much more appreciated in Britain than the U.S. even though he did win a variety of awards including five Oscars and four Grammys. Besides Bond he did scores for such films as BORN FREE, THE LION IN WINTER, SOMEWHERE IN TIME, DANCE WITH WOLVES, OUT OF AFRICA and HAMMETT. His work in TV was equally impressive with themes from THE PERSUADERS, THE ADVENTURER and THE GATHERING. His career lasted over 50 years and included being appointed OBE in 1999.
