Earlier this week, Bill Crider, one of my longest friends in mystery fandom, posted what is probably going to be his final blog entry.
Here’s the link: https://billcrider.blogspot.com/2017/12/update.html
I’ve known Bill for almost 40 years, but we’ve met in person only once. I’m not sure of the date, but if there was a Bouchercon held in Washington DC around 1980, that’s when it was.
There have been 115 comments of good wishes so far following this last post of his, including mine. There will probably be more. A nicer, more liked person in fandom you will probably never find.

Bill has enriched a lot of lives, from THE COYOTE CONNECTION to POP CULTURE MAGAZINE, and that’s something he can look back on and be proud of.

Bill has courage and plenty of it. Hope we all have as much. Love and kisses.

We all are still pulling for Bill, his qualities as a writer, man, friend, and leader in the genre are unquestionable.
This is never easy. I hope Bill and his family know how much we all feel he is a part of us.

Steve, yes, it was 1980 when the first Washington Bouchercon (Bill’s first) took place. We drove down with our British friends, Bob and Sue Adey. Sadly, Bob died a couple of years ago.

I spent some time with Bill Crider at the BOUCHERCON in Toronto in October. Then, a few weeks later, I hung out with Bill at the World Fantasy Convention in San Antonio. It was clear Bill was dealing with health issues, but he performed well on his panels . Bill is the consummate professional.

I knew Bill was able to attend both conventions. I was hoping that meant that his cancer was in remission, but sadly, apparently not.

I hope to see what you have in store for our celebration of Bill…
