He has a tradition of these duets. I remember one he indulged in with Tracy Chapman. Wonder where she is now.
One critic observed that collaborations inspire Clapton to greater heights. I kinda agree. ‘Riding with the King’; or his work with Roger Waters. Or even the Layla sessions with Allman.
I saw him live in a stadium once and another time found his old partner John Mayall on a little campus stage. Glad of it. Imagine growing up only knowing music via ‘earbuds’.
“Gimme One Reason” was the hit and it was pretty big at the time; and yea its mighty generous of Clapton to pair up with these young stars and give them a duet. But what I mean is, whatever happened to Chapman? Seems to have disappeared. The same thought struck me re: Puss-n-Boots. Remember the hoopla Norah Jones got from her debut album? Then she did a slow fade. It’s too harsh to say she succumbed to ‘sophomore slump’ but I would hazard to say that her career didn’t quite turn out as her promoters touted. Eh, whadda I know anyway, I’m not an industry watcher at all. I don’t know anything about the music biz. These are just my impressions.
About three months ago I had fun debating a devoted Stevie Ray Vaughan loyalist. I was allowed to choose anyone; I chose Jimi Hendrix just for the sake of argument. There was no enmity on my part, I admired my opponent’s enthusiasm and enjoyed his parries.
Norah Jones’ problem, if that’s what it is, is that she started at the top, and there’s been no place but down from there. Relatively speaking. She’s been recording and touring and winning awards ever since. With enough money, I’m sure, to work on any kind of project she wants to.
As for Tracy Chapman, you’re right. Her career has slowed down considerably the last 5, maybe 10 years or so.
