Almost literally. I lost my footing and fell on Thursday, breaking my fall with my left arm, but wrenching my wrist badly enough that my arm is now all wrapped up in whole cloth from elbow to near finger tips. The general assessment is that it will be a week before it comes off. The cast, not the arm. I can type with one hand, but it’s not fun, especially when I need a capital letter every now and then. So, I’m sorry to say, taking a break is the operative term. Except for an occasional update, I’m sure, I’ll see you on the other side.

We’ll still be here, take your time and heal.
Getting older stinks doesn’t it?
September 26th, 2020 at 6:08 pm
Get Well Quick!
September 26th, 2020 at 6:15 pm
Take care of yourself, Steve. We’ll look forward to hearing more from you when you’re healed again.
September 26th, 2020 at 6:40 pm
What’s to do?
Listen to the doctors.
Do the physical therapy.
Keep reading, watching, learning.
But if the worst comes to the worst, here’s a name to remember:
fred allen

mike, hardly a day goes by when i don’t think about fred allen. well almost every day.
September 26th, 2020 at 7:00 pm
Heal well.
September 26th, 2020 at 7:02 pm
Get better soon
We’re all friends here. You don’t need to capitalize until you’re completely healed. Unless you have OCD in which case I guess you do have to capitalize…
September 26th, 2020 at 7:19 pm
rick, right, who needs capital letters? pfui on them
September 26th, 2020 at 7:10 pm
Steve,
Get well soon!
WE are all pulling for you.
Mike
September 26th, 2020 at 7:21 pm
thanks all for the good wishes. am in no pain. will be a bear getting dressed and undressed, though.
September 26th, 2020 at 7:22 pm
and you should see the other guy
September 26th, 2020 at 7:42 pm
Get well soon! Obviously you need to learn how to bounce a little bit better.
September 26th, 2020 at 8:42 pm
oh i’ll bounce back all right. it just didn’t happen at the time.
September 26th, 2020 at 7:46 pm
So sorry to hear this, Steve. I’m glad it wasn’t any worse and hope you are not in too much pain. Much love and heal well!
September 26th, 2020 at 8:44 pm
love right back at you, carol. i’m going to watch my step a lot more carefully from now on, that’s a given!
September 26th, 2020 at 7:57 pm
Get well.
As people say, you don’t need capitals – archie the cockroach (and e.e. cummings) did o.k. without them.
September 26th, 2020 at 9:29 pm
IT’S CERTAINLY BETTER THAN ALL CAPITALS!
September 26th, 2020 at 10:47 pm
Thanks for the post, Steve. Seems as if you are well otherwise, so stay safe.
September 26th, 2020 at 11:09 pm
The very same thing happened to my sister. (She healed up nicely.) Like everyone else here, sending my best wishes for a fast and complete recovery.
September 27th, 2020 at 7:23 am
Every time I see a doctor, I’m asked if I have fallen lately. Evidently, as we get older the risk of serious injury from falls increases a lot. Hope you get well soon.
September 27th, 2020 at 8:19 am
Hey, Steve, feel better. Last time I did that (bad fall), two years ago this December, I broke my shoulder.
Getting older is no fun.
September 27th, 2020 at 9:28 am
Steve – What can I say but get well soon.
September 27th, 2020 at 10:29 am
thanks again, everyone, for all the good wishes. slept well, nine hours, the first night after, but reality has set in. those like jeff will know what i mean. things difficult to do with only one hand: flossing your teeth, opening anything sealed tight in glass or plastic, pulling your pants on straight… difficult but not impossible!

Funny that Walker mentions the doctor asking about falling, just reading a book by Atul Gawande called Being Mortal that mentions that is the most important thing for people over a certain age. One chapter in the book a lady with several important heath issues goes to a geriatrician and he isn’t worried about those issues, more concerned with feet and balance.
Who would have thought?
Not exactly the most fun book to read as we get older but certainly enlightening.
September 27th, 2020 at 1:02 pm
A few years ago, I was involved in editing a manual dealing with the dangers of falling for older folks. It’s an underrated but perilous aspect of aging. It pays to watch out for stairs! I’m glad You didn’t sustain a more catastrophic injury and hope you heal quickly.
September 27th, 2020 at 1:10 pm
Sorry to hear that. Hope you heal up soon!
September 27th, 2020 at 2:01 pm
As people on this thread are talking about aging — at what age(s) do we consider ourselves vulnerable?
September 27th, 2020 at 2:05 pm
a good question. speaking personally, 78.
September 27th, 2020 at 4:04 pm
I shattered my kneecap into about six thousand pieces. Not good times.
September 27th, 2020 at 4:09 pm
an understatement i’m sure, Howard
September 28th, 2020 at 3:08 am
ouch. sorry to read this, steve.
maybe this is the right time to catch up on viewing everything. the tv remote only needs one hand 🙂
see you next week. who needs capitals anyway? usually they’re boring places filled with politicians.
September 28th, 2020 at 8:06 am
Get well soon. Best wishes!
September 28th, 2020 at 10:04 am
What everyone else said.
BTW, I type one handed on the iPad, but not the laptop.
September 28th, 2020 at 2:06 pm
I’m getting better at typing, even Capitals. Right it’s doing the formatting I do, adding images and so on, that I’m going to hold off trying to do, hopefully no more than a few more days. Thanks again, everyone, for the good wishes!
September 28th, 2020 at 2:49 pm
Steve, just a quick question: were you masked prior to and during your fall?
September 28th, 2020 at 3:20 pm
No. This happened in my family room. No need to wear a mask inside. Only when I go out.
September 28th, 2020 at 3:29 pm
Appreciate the clarification.
September 29th, 2020 at 10:32 am
Hope your wrist is healed soon! If you were outside, I bet your first instinct would be to look around and see if anyone saw you. We don’t like to look silly in any event!
September 29th, 2020 at 11:03 am
Human nature, I guess. I have no other explanation.
