Music I’m Listening To: THE HONEYCOMBS “Have I the Right?”
Posted by Steve under Music I'm Listening To[4] Comments
From Wikipedia:
“The Honeycombs were an English beat/pop group, founded in 1963 in North London, best known for their chart-topping 1964 hit, the million selling ‘Have I the Right?’ The band featured Honey Lantree on drums, one of the few female drummers in bands at that time.”
Ms. Lantree died on December 23 at her home in Great Bardfield, Essex, England. She was 75.

Just showing the vagaries of memory:
In 1964, my brother and I were buying a few 45s when the record store owner gave my brother a free record that he said was “big in Australia” at the time. It was “Have I the Right?”
I’ve always liked it.

A great story, Jeff. I’ll bet, though, that back in 1964 you never dreamed back you’d be watching the group singing that same song on your computer or iPhone screen. Thanks for sharing!

I used to enjoy this song on the radio. Thank you for bringing it back.
Had never seen the Honeycombs before, and had no idea what they were like.

The only other national/international act of the time of an otherwise male band with a female drummer which comes to mind is the Velvet Underground. Though I suppose one could argue the Springfields. UK 2, US 1.
