TV Episode Review: KILLER WOMEN “La Sicaria.”

KILLER WOMEN “La Sicaria.” ABC, 07 January 2014. Season 1, Episode 1. 60 minutes. Tricia Helfer (as Molly Parker, a Texas Ranger), Marc Blucas, Alex Fernandez, Michael Trucco, Marta Milans. Guest star: Nadine Velazquez. Written by Hannah Shakespeare. Director: Lawrence Trilling.
Tricia Helfer, previously seen to good advantage n a regular basis as Number Six, a ultra-sexy humanoid Cylon on Battlestar Galactica, plays newly appointed Texas Ranger Molly Parker in this short-loved series taking place in the San Antonio area. Only six of eight episodes that were filmed for the first season were ever aired. There was no second season.
The premise for the series was that every week Molly is assigned cases of murder all of which were committed by women. In “La Sicaria” (the feminine form of the word “sicario,” or “hit man”), the killer of an ADA immediately after she says “I do” in church on her wedding day is easily identified. The question is, given that her stated motive doesn’t make sense, why did she do it?
The series didn’t fare will with the critics and was ignored by TV audiences, but I thought at was well done, and I enjoyed as many of the episodes as I was able to watch at the time. That Tricia Helfer makes a Texas Ranger’s uniform as well filled out as a Texas Ranger’s uniform ever could be might have had something to do with it. Plus she has the swagger of a Texas Ranger down pat. You might even call it a sashay. Poetry in motion.

I was with the critics and didn’t like this series much. I found it nice eye candy, but lacked believability or much else.
But what really killed it was the series opposite of it. CBS owned Tuesday with NCIS TV’s top-rated series. KILLER WOMAN aired opposite of CBS’ PERSON OF INTEREST (ranked 7th and was one of the best TV series on the air) and on NBC was CHICAGO FIRE that was in the Top 30.

Michael
Even though you didn’t care for it much, it is good to know that someone else was watching. With the lack of comments so far, I thought I may have been the only person in the country who did. (Pretty much so, actually.)
Thanks for pointing out what the competition was. It certainly didn’t help.
ABC promoted it extensively, and sent Tricia Helfer out on all of the talk shows (videos of which you can find o YouTube etc.) but it was apparently a lost cause.
Somehow I seem to have found someone who sold me a collector’s set of all eight episodes. I found the discs stored away in the basement last week, and I’ve started to work my way through them. I won’t try to review any of the rest, but I may leave a comment here if I find that I have anything more to say.

I have no idea how I saw any episodes. I consider PERSON OF INTEREST one of the best series to ever come out of network TV and I never missed an episode.
I do know I would have picked KILLER WOMEN over CHICAGO FIRE. I liked the eye candy better on the ABC series than the shirtless firemen on NBC.

Somehow I never heard about PERSON OF INTEREST until maybe the beginning of the third season. By that time the story line had gotten so complicated, I gave up rather quickly. I think maybe like FRINGE if I went back to the beginning, I’d finally see what the fuss was all about.

I watched all the episodes that aired. It was silly and bore no resemblance to any sort of reality as far as the Texas Rangers operate . . . but I enjoyed it anyway. Sometimes silly is fine, especially if Tricia Helfer is involved.

Oh. That’s interesting. I thought all female Texas Rangers looked like Tricia Helfer. No matter. We all need silly sometime.
And it’s good to know that I wasn’t the only one who enjoyed the show.

After good night’s sleep, I’ve decided that “firmly based in non-reality” is a phrase I’d rather use than “silly.” It fits my opinion of the show a whole lot better, especially as I go ahead and watch it anyway. Just my good thought for the morning.

The series was based on an Argentine crime drama and its latin roots showed. The light drama was influenced by the telenovela style.

Yes, you’re quite right about about the Argentinian roots of the US series. I came across a video of the Spanish version while looking for clips of the US show to insert into my review. It was Bad, with a capital B. Really bad.

Yes, “firmly based in non-reality” is an excellent way to describe it, and also fits a lot of other things I enjoy.
