ADDENDA TO CRIME FICTION IV, Part 10 - by
Allen J. Hubin
At one point I thought the prospects were fairly good for someone to take over from me the bibliographic work beginning with 1/1/2001. Now it appears that my hopes were in vain and thus that the 21st century crime fiction field will never be covered comprehensively (unless unexpectedly something comes of a more recent inquiry). On the assumption that I will have no bibliographic successor, I decided to add one further feature to the Revised CF IV: to identify “bridging” series characters (i.e., those that first appeared before my cutoff date but no second appearance until after that date). I committed myself to identify the characters by name and the pre-cutoff books in which they appeared. I considered listing the post-cutoff books of their appearances but realized just in time that that was an endless road down which I didn’t want to travel. This project proved to be a rather large undertaking, which would have been impossible without the Internet and much more difficult (and more incomplete) without the generous assistance of Willetta Heising, who has been diligently keeping track of most criminous series. And the project had one side benefit: turning up a few series and a few books that should have been in CFIV. In addition, I made another rather productive run at finding author death dates, using Contemporary Authors and the Social Security Death Benefit records. Here is a sampling of the results from the A-B author sections, along with other bits of new/corrected information. By “subsequent novels” is meant that at least two further appearances are known; by “subsequent novel(s)” is meant that only one further appearance is presently known. In each case I give the book title from CFIV and its publication date. AANROOY, JACQUES. Pseudonym of Sir Henry Hubert Juta, 1857-1930. South African lawyer, judge and politician. ABEL, KENNETH.
