ZENO, a/k/a Gerald Lamarque a/k/a Kenneth Allerton: Update #2.
Posted by Steve under Authors[13] Comments
Jon Paul Morgan, the author of the article on “Zeno,” from which most of the information in the previous blog entry on the pseudonymous author and convicted killer was taken, has his own blog site where you can read the piece in its entirety.
This result of a long investigation first appeared in Punch magazine. All of the details — only touched on before — are in the article, along with a number of photos. (Click on the pages to make them readable.)
It’s a fascinating story, and hats off to Jon Paul Morgan. For doing the research he did and writing it up, he’s earned the credit .

Gerald Theodore lamarque was a great man… His book the cauldron should have been made into a film, it would have been the greatest war film made. A bridge to far was a bit corny.

My wife was born Susanne Lamarque & is Gerald Lamarque’s 1st cousin. I was living with her family in 1958 when her father JJ(“Jack”) Lamarque handed me a Daily Mail cutting about his nephew’s trial. In 2009, thanks to AncenstryDotCom & so on, I traced Gerald’s son & daughters who themselves had learned of his true identity only in 1958. After WW2, as Allerton, he had set his own house on fire, rescuing wife & children, before pocketing the insurance money & disappearing. His wife & children were informed only thanks to police & insurance inquiries following the 1958 murder. After 14 years in Wormwood Scrubs, Gerald married his prison visitor & settled in Malta, whence they were ousted by an informaer. They returned to London, where his daughter Maureen saw him in hospital just once before he died.
I tried to contact his daughter by the 2nd marriage but she didn’t respond.
Gerald’s uncle Jack died in 1961 after a life scarcely less colourful.
I wonder if Robert Lamarque is related to Jack’s sister & Gerald’s aunt? Do please make contact!!

Have been unable to download Jon Paul Morgan’s article in a legible form even when magnified. Would very much like to read this as I admire “Zeno’s” writing very much. Any help locating a hard copy or Ipad legible copy of the article much appreciated. Thanks. Jon Rake.

I’m the son of Gerald Lamarque age 51, I must just say that all put on the internet nowadays is a load of rubbish. People saying things they clearly have not got a clue about, like the murder of Eric batty. The man was a sex pest and the people in the know around the area the time knew he was a rapist including the police. People like that deserve what they get. Gerald was a man of honour and a staunch principled man…

Dear Mr. (Robert) Lamarque. Not sure if you will ever read this short note, but nevertheless I am writing some words down.
Myself, a Dutchman borne in 1972, have been very close friends with a (then) private and his family who has served in 2nd platoon of the 21st Ind. Par. Coy under your father during operation Market Garden. Although he sometimes mentioned things that took place or happened in Oosterbeek, he really never talked about it. Not to us and not to his family. He couldn’t and we didnot ask, as he was already a hero to us for even risking his life to liberate people he’d never known. One of the view things (or people) he mentioned was your father. After the platoon CO was not able to continue command, your father took over (t)his role and made sure the boys under him would get out alive. I am convinced that the way you father was and acted, was an example for my good friend’s past war way of live. Only by reading your father’s book ‘The Cauldron’ some years ago, gave us an inside of what all happened. Although maybe partially fiction….we never found out. It really must have been a good person.
Thank you.

Hello all,
What a fascinating story. I’m a publisher, and I’d love to see Zeno’s books back in print.
Mr Robert Lamarque, I’d love to discuss the possibility of getting your father’s work back out there.
Please get in touch if this is of interest. You can contact us here:

I’m a librarian and am researching the multiple identities of Gerald Lamarque for some database work I am doing. If possible, I would like to know the date of Jon Paul Morgan’s original Punch article.

Hello Kathie Coblentz
My apologies this thread has just come to my attention and I saw your post. My article was published in the 15-28 August 1998 addition of Punch Magazine. Pages 22-25 under the heady title “Solving a 30-Year-Old Literary Mystery -BROUGHT TO BOOK”.
Gerald Lamarque was fascinating character, but sadly there was much pain left in that tragic hero’s wake.
I’ve copied a link below. IF you have trouble accessing it just drop me a line and I will forward it.
Best wishes to all,
JPM
