This is one of my all-time favorite scenes from a musical.
The whole film is wonderful!
It’s a favorite of my sister too.
And many people think “Swing Time” is the best Astaire-Rogers movie.

I won’t argue with them.

It’s not the best song from the picture, and it’s not the most elaborately choreographed dance from the picture, but it’s so incredibly joyous and effervescent that you can’t help but smile to it.
I’ve seen SWING TIME maybe 20 times, but the most magical screening was one I attended in New York City during the late ’70s. It was part of an “Art Deco Film Festival” held at Radio City Music Hall, where the film originally opened in 1936 — a venue that was pretty much the same 40-odd years later. It was wonderfully eerie to contemplate that some one had sat in my seat four decades earlier and watched the picture projected on the same screen, with a similarly large and entranced audience. What’s more, the screening took place during winter — as the film does — and I excited the Music Hall to find New York blanketed with a fresh covering of white snow, not yet slushy and sooty from auto traffic. I could hear in my head the strains of the film’s “A Fine Romance,” which has a snowy setting. Just magical!
