I started having problems with one of my three computers on Friday, the one with my scanner and photoshop program, along with my old WordPerfect files, so while I can get along without them, it’s not so easily done. It froze up almost immediately every time I logged in. It took me into the late evening hours to get access to my files and back them up, thanks to a helping hand from my son-in-law Mark who deals with computers all day long.
And I don’t know how or why, but as soon as I got the backing up done, the computer decided that play time was over and went back to work, and I was able to post Walker’s column about collecting pulp covers on Saturday. But nonsense like this wears me out any more. I must be getting old.
I’m going to take a couple of days off from posting. Plenty of other things that needed to be done didn’t get done this weekend, and I was going to be busy all day tomorrow anyway.
Speaking softly so the one upstairs doesn’t hear me, but between you and me, I hate computers.

Me too!

I’m having serious computer problems, too. My desktop has decided not to boot up, so I have no access to my documents and photos. They’re backed up, but they’re Windows, and this laptop I’m using is Apple. I could get a new computer, I guess, but it would have Windows 8, and Windows 10 is coming out in a couple of days. This is a bad situation all around.

No matter what, this just emphasizes the importance of backups. I thought I was OK with the files on Friday’s balky computer, but it turns out that the backup drive had stopped working earlier this summer. A potential semi-disaster uncovered just in time!

I worked as a programmer and tech support specialist for years and those three words were my daily mantra.
Now I just do computers for fun, they are all Macs, no PCs, and I don’t find myself saying that any more. Not that Macs don’t have problems, but I can generally figure them out a lot more easily.

Windows 10 is due on the 29th. If you think its wacky now…

Steve,
You work very hard. And you deserve a break!
Inspired by this discussion, I backed up my own web site.

My fingers are crossed, but I do very simple things with my computer. I know some talented technicians in town who can help me if I have trouble.

I am medic for two Macs and a PC. When there is a problem I find googling whatever phrase of computerese the desk top is telling me usually leads to experts that have found a solution. YouTube is another source.
This is of course if you don’t know or are related to any IT expert.

Googling helps me as well, sometimes, but what does a person do when they have only one computer that cannot connect to the Internet?
I say “sometimes” because either (a) the solution as explained is way over my head, or (b) whatever tabs etc. I’m supposed to find don’t exist on my version of whatever is causing the problem.

You guys are way beyond me. I wouldn’t dare trust to google to solve my problems.

I’m back in action again, albeit dipping my toe in the water slowly but surely. No images in this first post for Tuesday, but coming up are a few major articles and reviews that have been waiting too long already. They’ll need some more effort on my part, and I’ll start working on them as soon as I can. Look for them soon!

Hot dog! Coming attractions! And only a couple of weeks until PulpFest too. I look forward to finding out how much fun you had.
