THE PLAYER. NBC, 2015; Thursdays, 10pm-11pm. Kung Fu Monkey Productions and David Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television. Cast: Philip Winchester, Wesley Snipes, Charity Wakefield, Damon Gupton. Created by John Rogers and John Fox. Executive Producers: John Rogers, John Zinman, Patrick Massett, John Davis, and John Fox.
It is the new fall TV season, and time for new series to be judged. Some new series will join our list of series we watch every week, more new series will be rejected and forgotten. While not the worse of the new series this season (Fox’s Minority Report is the worse) The Player shows all the signs of a doomed series. Rejected by critics and viewers alike, a strange premise ineptly handled, The Player is one to watch soon before it is gone forever.
The premise of The Player is that there is a secret society of the world’s very rich and powerful that has set up a system where they bet on crime. Created in America around the turn of the 20th Century, the game grew popular with the ruthless rich and powerful of the era. Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage created the first computer to help with the game and Thomas Edison got it to work. The game went global and quickly was out of control and started WWI. To regain control of the game the House was created. The House is run by the Pitboss who sets up the game, the Dealer who monitors the game and offers assistance to the final employee of the House –The Player.

But this is NBC, a major free network, so it should come as no surprise that a premise open to thought-provoking discussions on the immorality of the bored rich gambling on the outcome of crimes would instead be a mindless fast pace violent implausible immortal action TV series with the inability to avoid any TV cliché ever written.
The next clip tells us more about the people and their role in the game:
The Player is Alex Kane, a former special op with a dark past, now living in Las Vegas as the World’s Greatest Security consultant. Philip Winchester (Strike Back) does what he can with his limited range to play this standard issue TV action hero.
In the type of creative thinking typical for this series Alex’s best friend is Police Detective Cal Brown (Damon Gupton) who worries about his friend and is always the cop in charge when Alex destroys part of the city fighting bad guys. Alex’s love of his life is his ex-wife Virginia Lee (Daisy Betts). They love each other very much and have finally decided to get back together. That night while our hero and ex celebrate in bed bad guys attack and she is killed. But this is modern comic book inspired fiction, so is she really dead?
Meanwhile at the House is the Pitboss Mr. Johnson played by Wesley Snipes (Blade) in not his best performance. Mr. Johnson is an evil soulless man who believes in blackmail, murder, whatever it takes to serve the House. He also believes in tough love when dealing with The Player.
The Dealer is the blonde beauty Cassandra King. Charity Wakefield (Mockingbird Lane) has shown she is capable of portraying the series most conflicted character. She is aware of the immorality of the game but in some of TV’s lamest dumb-down dialog tries to convince Alex that they are doing good, saving the victims of crimes enjoyed by the evil rich gamblers.
The series features more property destruction than a Marvel’s superhero movie, more pointless car chases and stunts than a Bond movie and a believability level that wouldn’t convince a 12 year old. The suspense is weaken by the number of deus ex machina devices used – from an all knowing computer named ADA that Cassandra can use to get Alex out of any jam to Johnson’s ability to call in a get out jail card whenever the cops get too close.
You can view the pilot episode for free at iTunes. This is just one of many TV series that first episode can be downloaded for free at iTunes.
The odds are against The Player. While handicapped by a bad time slot it has a strong lead-in (Blacklist). How much of the Blacklist audience it loses will tip you off on its future. Personally, I would bet The Player doesn’t survive to see January.

For the record, Michael sent me this review on October 8th, just before I took the holiday weekend off from blogging. It’s taken me a week to get caught up enough to post it.
So far five episodes have been aired, and it’s still on. But Michael has predicted its demise before January, so there’s plenty of time to go before we know if he’s right or not.
I DVRed the first episode, but I haven’t watched it yet. If it lasts, I may pick the entire series up on DVD. Do you think there’s any hope?

We quit THE PLAYER after 15 minutes in the first episode. Surprised it has not been canceled yet.
Also quickly pulled the trigger on ROSEWOOD.
Never even tried Minority Report.

Usually by now at least one of the networks have cancelled a fall series, but this year is different. Welcome to networks seasons lasting beyond Sept to May and now 365 days a year. They don’t have the programming to stretch the entire year so now they will be more patient. Oddly, the early cancelled series now get cancelled in early filming – this year’s NBC’s remake of COACH got dumped before airing.
The shows currently in danger are Fox’s Minority Report (Fox’ Rosewood is doing well as Empire’s lead-in. I found the female cop in Rosewood too annoying to put up with and dropped it after one episode). ABC’s Blood and Oil which is hurting possible “hit” Quantico” which lack of believability drove me away after the pilot). CBS’s has no problems and a hit with Limitless (which I don’t like). NBC has the hit fall show Blindspot (think Blacklist and both I have bought season passes for) but The Player is top on their in trouble list but the net may wait for football to leave Thursday night and CBS return to its regular shows. Problem with that is ABC’s lineup is the real threat on Thursday.
What I am watching…nothing live. I sample all the networks series on iTune where free download of the first episode is common or I watch it at a free streaming service such as the network’s website. I bought season passes of series I knew I would buy in DVD if I wanted to wait a year…The Blacklist, The Blindspot, iZombie, and Doctor Who (which first couple of episodes were the most fun the series has had since Tom Baker).
And those disappointed so far with the new season don’t tune out. This year new shows on the networks and cable will be premiering all year round with the next batch coming in January.

I heard something about a COACH re-boot starring Dennis Hastert, but I guess nothing ever came of it.

I couldn’t see THE PLAYER going long so I haven’t watched yet despite liking Winchester. Ironic that BLINDSIDE is a hit since it stars his partner from STRIKE BACK though. I will watch it on Hulu if it makes it until Christmas.
Nothing really stands out among the new shows yet, though there is a lot going on SUPERGIRL at CBS. LIMITLESS began well but has devolved into yet another hero with a quirk series ( a pill makes him brilliant). So far GOTHAM and THE FLASH from last year are the only things I feel any compulsion to watch, SCORPION which was good last year has been increasingly silly this time around.
Every year I watch less and less on the Networks and more on cable or on line. Even the network shows I tend to binge watch on line rather than live.

David, I can’t wait to see how CBS turns SUPERGIRL into a procedural drama like nearly every drama they air.
How are you liking the changes in GOTHAM? I find I still can’t find a costume superhero show I like (even though GOTHAM tries hard to avoid the costumes but keep the style). I am a big comic reader but more to humor and action hero minus the tights. THE SPIRIT is more my speed and I wish someday someone would adapt the character for a decent film or TV series as opposed to what we have gotten (think the movie was bad try to watch the TV Movie pilot).
SCORPION is everything I should like except I actively hate the lead character along with the forced romance.
I thought LIMITLESS was a bad movie adapted into just another CBS cop show.
Then if anyone wants to suffer watch THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA. This could have been a great show but the writers seem intent in making every bad creative choice possible. Debra Messing is fun to watch as a supercop but add a family life that is a bad sitcom and adapt every bad aspect of 70s cop shows and this one is a mess.
Cable is still hit and miss with most of the good stuff premiere dates TBA, stuff like Sundance’s HAP & LEONARD (Joe Lansdale books), Cinemax’s QUARRY (Max Allen Collins), HBO’s WESTWORLD (that has to be better than TV’s last attempt BEYOND WESTWORLD (CBS, 1980 – you can watch it on Warner Archive streaming service).
Perhaps the worst new cop show this year is MOONBEAM CITY on Comedy Central (ARCHER it is not).
Yet as bad as most TV is, has been and always will be (something that can be said for all forms of entertainment), it is better than the movies and offers enough variety that there is something for everyone.

According to today’s (10/23/15) Deadline, NBC has reduced the order for THE PLAYER from 13 to 9.
The show is filming #9 this week and will shut down production when done. So only a few more weeks of original episodes of THE PLAYER.
Fox MINORITY REPORT has all ready had its order dropped from 13 to 10 and will end after the tenth episode.

I haven’t checked the calendar, but it sounds as though the end will come long before January. You nailed this one, Michael.

Mid-November according to Hollywood Reporter.

Some notes of interest for the Mystery*File TV viewer.
CW – Since all programs are made by the studios that own the network (CBS and Warner Brothers) CW is slow to cancel. Only REIGN is in any trouble.
ABC – BLOOD AND OIL will end after 10th episode. QUANTICO has been picked up for a full season. NASHVILLE is in trouble as usual, but CASTLE is in danger due to its age and having its butt kicked by NBC’s BLINDSPOT. WICKED CITY, a series about a serial killer in 1982 Los Angeles, premieres Tuesday the 27th.
CBS – LIMITLESS has been picked up for a full season. CSI: CYBER is doomed. NCIS:LA is in trouble for the same reason as CASTLE (NBC’s BLINDSPOT).
FOX – MINORITY REPORT is gone after its tenth episode. ROSEWOOD has been picked up for a full season. SLEEPY HOLLOW, BONES and any sitcom are in trouble.
NBC – BLINDSPOT has been picked up for the season. THE PLAYER ends in mid-November. The network’s biggest problems are its sitcoms and its suicidal handling of THE BLACKLIST.
PBS – BBC’S SHERLOCK returns with a one episode special. “The Abominable Bride” will air January 1st.
Starz – DA VINCI’S DEMONS has just began it last season.
Midseason will be here before you know it.
