Music I’m Listening To: RED WILDER BLUE “Darkness, Darkness.”

I know very little about this pop rock group that was around for a short while in the early 1970s. They produced only one self-titled LP, which includes this song, written by Jesse Colin Young:
Members of the group are Michael Ballew (guitar, vocals), Danny Wilder (bass, piano, vocals), Lucky Floyd (drums, vocals), Mack Tubb (guitar, vocals).

used to listen to them in late 60’s in Venice Beach where they also had turtle races on Thursday nights. Great sounds…miss those times.

Dan Wilder is my uncle. He’s still playing around the Long Beach area. Mike Ballew had a pretty successful recording career, never really mainstream. I remember getting this album and being totally amped that my uncle actually had an album out. I have a pristine promo copy bought from a midwest redio station on ebay.

I remember this band fairly well, from the same period mentioned above. In late 1970, a club opened in Hermosa Beach, CA across the alley from the Lighthouse (a legendary jazz club). The club was called Schlumpfelder’s. They jammed there regularly into 1971 when the placed closed. They did Crosby Stills and Nash songs as good as the originals. I knew they were mainly Southern California guys. I was gone for about 10 months (navy) and when I returned in late 71, the word was that they were playing somewhere in the inland empire. Those were the days!

Thanks for remembering RedWilderBlue. We just met together in Texas where a producer is negotiating a deal qith a German company that wants to remaster our album PLUS make it a double album which includes the proposed 2nd album that we recorded ourselves. Keep your eye out for it!

Had the good fortune to pick this album up from a charity shop here in the UK. Fantastic. Love the acoustic. £4 well spent. Glad to hear you guys still around.
