A Giant in the Field Has Left Us: ED GORMAN (1941-2016).

ED GORMAN (1941-2016).
I was away from the computer most of the day yesterday, and I’m only now catching up with the bad news. (Dan Stumpf’s movie review was scheduled for yesterday late on Saturday.) Ed Gorman’s death this past weekend was not unexpected, as his long battle with cancer was well known, and the last post on his blog was on way back on July 1st.
Bill Crider talks about the man and his career on his blog more eloquently than I can, as does James Reasoner on his blog. Besides a long career in writing and editing, Ed Gorman was one of the friendliest and most helpful men I’ve ever corresponded with, and although I never met him, this hits me hard on a personal level.
In the title of this post I said that Ed was a Giant in his field. He was actually a towering figure in four: Mystery, Western, Science Fiction, and Horror. From the Fantastic Fiction website, here’s a list of the books and stories he left behind:

Thanks for the extended Gorman bibliography, Steve. It gives some idea how prolific he was. I even have one you missed: the science fiction police procedural STAR PRECINCT: MIND SLAYER (1992) as by Richard Driscoll. He also did several books as Daniel Ransom: TOYS IN THE ATTIC (1986), THE BABYSITTER (1989), THE SERPENT’S KISS (1992), THE LONG MIDNIGHT (1993), and probably others. Somehow with all the books and stories he wrote, even during the years he was battling the multiple myeloma that finally claimed him, he managed to give so much energy to helping, advising, and promoting other writers. Ed Gorman was a great friend to the whole popular fiction field. I considered him one of my best friends although (like you) I never actually met him.

Jon
Thanks for the pointing out those titles missing from the bibliography I found on the Fantastic Fiction website. The Space Precinct book I knew nothing about, but I had heard that he had done the Daniel Ransom books. I imagine there are still books to add, as well as tons of short fiction in all genres that FF doesn’t generally concern itself with.
And as you say, he did all this writing while editing other books and staying in touch and helping other writers and fans such as myself on a constant daily basis. A truly amazing man.

Ed Gorman was a prolific writer. But his Quality Control kept his work top-notch. I didn’t know about Ed Gorman’s SF work so I’ll have to track down a copy of that.
