I believe that Bill developed his chops in big band units around the Boston area. I always thought they sounded better than Blood Sweat & Tears. It’s too bad they didn’t make the airplane ride.

Bill Chase died in that plane crash in 1974, when he was only 39. You are quite right about his growing up in the Boston area. Before starting his own group, Chase (born Chiaiese) was already a long-time veteran of the Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman big bands. The group made only three albums before his death.
