Music I’m Listening To: NANCI GRIFFITH “Love at the Five and Dime.”

An ode to Woolworth’s, a store that at one time was a mainstay of small town America, if not the world, but which you have to be of a certain age to remember now.

Please see for a nice poem on this subject:

I loved this store as a kid.

My favorite store too. I always went to the kids books first then the comics.
Or was it the other way around?
PS. Thanks for the link!

Steve, you have done it again.
Griffith is another one of my long time favorites, and her song Southbound Train on the Flyer album is one of the most beautifully written and saddest songs I’ve heard (plus the piano part is excellent). The whole album is great, as is just about all of her work.
Lastly, hope you are finally feeling better and back to normal.

I think I have all of her LPs (vinyl) through the 1980s and 1990s, including FLYER. Some I wore out listening to them so many times. When I came across this one, though, I realized that I’d been neglecting her, and I will have to start buying her work again, this time on CD. Maybe replace the LPs too.
Here’s a bonus for you, David, and yes, it’s taken longer than I thought, but I’m back on my feet again. Hope all is well with you and everyone else also.

That’s a sweet song.
My most vivid memory is getting school supplies in the fall from the dime store. Watercolors and pencils, etc. Also got my pet turtle there.
Don’t recall a Woolworth’s with an elevator!

No elevators in my home town, either, Mike. I think Austin TX was a bigger town than Cadillac MI was, even back then.

I have her CD’s up to Clock Without Hands, but then fell off the wagon for some reason. Like you, I need to hear and collect some of her recent music.
