Music I’m Listening To: RHONDA VINCENT & THE RAGE “Orange Blossom Special.”

“Orange Blossom Special” is one of those songs that every band who plays it tries to do it faster and better than every other band that’s ever played it. Most bands fall far short. To my eyes and ears, this group comes awfully close to the top.

As a classical fan, had never heard any of this.
But it was a fun tune to listen to.

There are only a couple of musical genres that I don’t particularly enjoy. One is rap music, the other is opera — about as nearly polar opposites as you can get!

I’ve loved opera since I was a teenager.
Mystery fiction and opera have much in common.
Both tell stories. They are both some of the greatest repositories of story telling in human history.
People are very interested in storytelling today. It has links to social movements, journalism, design, business and every human activity.
Guess what? We’re sitting on the mother lodes of storytelling in mystery fiction. And in opera.
And in both mystery fiction and opera, people have unleashed themselves and let their imaginations soar. John Dickson Carr, Ellery Queen, Dashiell Hammett: this is pure imagination.
