Music I’m Listening To: THE GREEN SLIME “Theme Song.”

This past Father’s Day, Jon and I went to see a 16mm screening of The Green Slime at the New Beverly in Los Angeles. Apparently, the print, which was somewhat red and faded, is part of Quentin Tarantino’s personal collection. Although the title suggests otherwise, it’s a thoroughly entertaining science fiction film, and we both enjoyed it. The movie’s theme song is a fun piece of schlocky 60s psychedelic rock written by Charles Fox and produced, arranged and performed by surf music pioneer Richard Delvy. You can listen to it here:

Surprisingly entertaining film, the good cast helps.

The two make stars, Robert Horton and Richard Jaeckel, are fine. but the female lead, Luciana Paluzzi, is less so, and the three way love triangle mostly just takes up running time. For 1968 are crude, I admit, but mot as bad as in many other sci-fi movies I’ve seen. The monsters are silly, too, but still a lot of fun.
OTOH the movie has been subject to a lot of mockery, both by users on IMDb, and the folks at Mystery Science Theater 3000, for which this served as the pilot episode. I cannot watch that show. People who cannot do, should not be making a living by laughing at the efforts of others.
I also am not a fan of “so bad it’s good” kind of reviews. Movies should be rated on fairly and on their own terms. Jon and I both enjoyed it. It was meant to be a fun movie and it was.
Afterward Jon and I went to the Veggie Grill on Sunset Boulevard. Delicious! It was a great day.

My big problem with the whole film was that the creatures weren’t really slimy. It was just this sort of empty promises that led my generation to revolt against the establishment.

Oh no, Dan. There was plenty of green slime in the movie.
I never took biology in high school or college, but it’s my theory that the green slime were the babies of the asteroid monsters, and the one-eyed tentacle waving creatures were the adults in the room.
Back in 60s there were plenty of other reasons to rebel against the establishment. We needn’t blame the slime.
