A Science Fiction TV Review: TRAVELERS “Travelers” (2016).

TRAVELERS “Travelers” (2016). Canadian-American production. Netflix. 17 October 2016 (Season 1, Episode 1). Eric McCormack, MacKenzie Porter, Nesta Cooper, Jared Abrahamson, Reilly Dolman, Patrick Gilmore. Creator-Screenplay: Brad Wright. Director: Nick Hurran.
It takes the full hour, but as the pilot episode for this series, it does exactly what it is supposed to do: Introduce both the players and the plot with just enough story to have we the viewer (me) anxious to see the next one.
I can’t say that it’s a new idea (so I won’t), but you can tell me whether or not you’ve heard this one before: a group of travelers from a rather bleak future comes to our time and place to make some corrections. They do this by entering taking over their new hosts’ bodies at the time they would otherwise have died.
I apologize if I’ve already told you more than you wanted to know. Me, I prefer going into a series totally cold and not having any idea what the whole story line is. At least I can’t tell you what’s going to happen next, what the team’s various missions are going to be, and for a very good reason: I have no idea.
The series was on for three seasons, so at least more than few people found a reason to keep watching. This first episode was very stylishly done, with better than average acting on the part of all the participants. Each of the characters who have become hosts for the travelers is quite well drawn. In terms of the lighting and some of the locations, there are some elements of noir to the story. Not as much as in Blade Runner, say, but it’s there. Whether it continues, I do not know.

I saw this when it first aired and was disappointed. I love the premise of time travel but it is so rarely done right. My problem here was the series did not give me a reason to care. The characters were dull and familiar, the writing and acting average.
In a world of 500 original scripted TV series I don’t waste time sticking around waiting for the possibility the show would get better. Besides its a streaming show if it suddenly clicks I can always go back and catch up.
Don’t let the number of seasons fool you. Ratings play a role but is not always the major reason. Netflix does not have ads so its less important than type of viewer – is the series bringing in new or different viewers. Cost plays a role in keeping a series.
TRAVELER had an audience but never set the world a fire and Netflix is fond of cancelling even successful shows after three seasons (don’t ask me why).
One of the best examples of how ratings are used by networks today is SYFY. SYFY cancelled it most popular program THE EXPANSE because of cost and SYFY keeps very very very low rated and cheap WYNONNA EARP. SYFY had other shows such as EXPANSE for its cult viewers. WYNONNA EARP has a loyal young hip audience that advertisers chase like a unicorn (two of the characters have a hot lesbian affair that draws much of the diversity crowd).

Sorry, but I disagree with michaels this time. We really liked TRAVELERS (yes, there are multiple travelers) and were sorry when it was canceled. It wasn’t perfect, but what is? It was a lot better (IMHO) than THE EXPANSE, which we quit after season one. I did care about (some of) the characters and kept watching to find out what happens next.

So far then, a split decision on the series itself, whereas my review was of only the first episode. You never can tell. Sometimes series find their way after only a so-so pilot, others seem to lose all their punch after a great opening.
My mistake was in trying to gauge the success of the overall series by pointing out the TRAVELERS had three seasons. Michael is correct that when it comes to Netflix and even some cable shows that all the usual rules are off. The usual network guidelines no longer hold. A lot of factors come into play when it comes to cable and streaming and which shows are axed and which ones are allowed to continue, and I have to keep that in mind.

I had never heard of this show.
Thanks for telling me about it.
It sounds like my cup of tea – plus it’s Canadian!

2. Jeff, thanks for correcting my lack of S in title.
I hear from friends after they visit this site about how nice the comment section is. People disagree so nicely. But where is the fun if we agree every time. I like to read other POV, how else does one grow and learn?
I didn’t dislike it, I was disappointed it wasn’t better. It is a series I would have watched when there were only three networks. Today there is too much choice to settle. It is nice you enjoyed it.
Steve, is there a conspiracy behind all the attention Canadian TV has been getting? Is Mike Grost twisting your arm?

Not exactly a conspiracy, Michael, but sometimes what comes up in the comments attracts my attention in a way it wouldn’t have gone otherwise.
As far I can tell, it started with a TV Movie made in Canada called TIME OF DEATH 5/14
Then came:
5/30 COUNTERSTRIKE
6/3 REPUBLIC OF DOYLE
6/4 RELIC HUNTER
and now 6/7 TRAITORS
You may or many believe me, though, when I say that I had no idea that TRAITORS was a Canadian show until I looked it up online to write my review of it.

I report to Ottawa regularly 🙂

Well, OK, Mike, but please keep me out of it, if you would. An innocent bystander is all I ever wanted to be when I grew up.
