SF Trailers I’m Watching: DUNE (2020).

I read Frank Herbert’s original novel when it was serialized in Analog SF, thought it was OK, but I never read any of the sequels — and who knew there were going to be so many of them? I also passed on both David Lynch’s movie adaptation(1984) and the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel mini-series.
Those of you who may be bigger fans of the book than I am, what do think of the new movie coming out in December, based on the trailer below?

Well, I’m willing to be surprised.
But I hate the visual design and the performances as shown in the trailer…especially the shown performance of the lead character, Paul.
Incidentally I actually liked very much the maligned 1984 film version by David Lynch who wanted his directorial credit removed from it because it screwed up his vision. maybe so, but I think what’s on the screen is epic and fairly thrilling.

I would have watched the 1984 version, but I decided to wait until I’d read the book again, and so far I never have. I do know that a lot of fans have come around to liking it, as you have, Rick.

Rick, I am so, so tired of Timothee Chalamet, incredibly overrated and yet ubiquitous.

I must lead a sheltered life, perhaps deliberately so. I have never seen Timothee Chalamet in anything before. Never even heard his name.

I liked the Lynch film and the television mini series, so I’ll see this, but I doubt I’ll venture out to a theater to see it, and I wonder if many will.

I liked the Lynch film, too. But I don’t think you can fit all that happens in DUNE into a 2-hour movie. A 10-episode Netflix series would be more like it.

Now that’s something I would watch. Guaranteed!

I’m fed up with the solemn, gothic aesthetic that invaded cinema two decades ago. I don’t intend to see it.
