Music I’m Listening To: THE BEE GEES “Massachusetts.”

Back when the Bee Gees were recording hit after hit, I was never particularly a fan, but when I recently found an acoustic version of this song on YouTube, it knocked my socks off.

It’s a superb track which too many people have forgotten all about. I’m not sure if they were the original authors, but their interpretation is definitive. The Bee Gees are too often typecast as a disco group when the truth is, they boasted a fairly diverse repertoire of tunes before SNF.
Ah, early Bee Gees. Representatives of a vanished world of tunesmiths in this country.

When the brothers wrote the song, they had never been to Massachusetts; they just liked the sound of the name as it was unusual, containing a lot of S’s. The idea of the lights having gone out in Massachusetts was to suggest that everyone had gone to San Francisco.
Feel I’m goin’ back to Massachusetts
Something’s telling me I must go home
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
The day I left her standing on her own
Tried to hitch a ride to San Francisco
Gotta do the things I wanna do
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
They brought me back to see my way with you
Talk about the life in Massachusetts
Speak about the people I have seen
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
And Massachusetts is one place I have seen
I will be back to Massachusetts
(I will be back to Massachusetts)
I will be back to Massachusetts

Not to be confused with ‘Moonlight in Vermont’

Nice. Robin’s voice and the harmony were amazing.
