Music I’m Listening To: Two by Carson Robson.

Carson Robson is a name I’m sure will draw a blank from everyone reading this, but back in 1942 he put out a record (a 78) that when my brother and I found it in our parents’ collection, we played so often that I think we wore the grooves off. 78’s being rather fragile items, we both agree that it finally somehow got broken, but while we had it, we loved it.
And guess what? My brother went looking, and found both sides on YouTube. Isn’t the Internet wonderful?

Western Swing is a solid genre that holds up remarkably well. I have at least four hundred tracks in my library.
The bands were smart, salty, and hip despite their early-pop era. They knew ‘what time it was’, make no mistake.
From this great tradition we get Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Kitty Wells, Jimmy Rodgers, Loretta Lynn, and Waylon Jennings. Grand stuff.
Top picks:
Milton Brown and His Musical Brownies
Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys

Gene Autry spoke of him as a significant early influence.

Another rich lode is Gene Austin. One of the first ‘crooners’. Big influence on Crosby et al. Though his song-o-graphy is not western, he was born in Texas.
Man, when you’re feeling down …days when your karma runs over your dogma …Austin is the go-to guy.
Our musical heritage!

Looks like that first line should have read:
“Carson Robson is a name I’m sure will draw a blank from almost everyone reading this…”
It’s good to know that I was wrong!

Nauck’s Archive auction (#10 of 12) is happening this weekend. Oct 29-30.
This special programming is a chance to hear (and bid on) recordings made on wax cylinders, 78rpm discs, Edison diamond discs, radio transcription discs, ‘picture’ records and even cardboard ‘Hit of the Week’ records –apparently recorded on cardboard(?)–from the dawn of the recorded sound era. Every format represented.
