I saw this earlier today, ironically just after reading a review of a book with a lesser McGinnis cover the blogger was questioning if it was indeed McGinnis.
For most of us McGinnis is closely related to our early days in this genre and his long runs with writers like Halliday, Brown, Prather, MacDonald, and Chaber among many others. That he also did exceptional covers for mainstream fiction, historical fiction, and Westerns not to mention his film work.
An era has ended. Hard Case gave us a last hurrah, but with McGinnis death part of who we were, our youth, our memories are also gone.

You said it all, David. Robert McGinnis was the best paperback cover artist of all time. You and I and hundreds of other collectors have known this for nearly 60 years. We shall never see his like again.

Don’t forget Art Scott’s McGinnis books, notably THE ART OF ROBERT E. McGINNIS.

The illustration I added to this post came in fact from the cover of Art’s book. By boosting its size to show off the detail in it, Art’s name was clipped off. An error on my part. Thanks for giving me a chance to admit it.

Robert McGinnis was a legendary paperback artist. Art Scott, who corresponded with McGinnis for years, should provide a tribute to his friend. David is right: with the passing of Robert McGinnis, our memories of his fabulous artwork starts to fade away.
