My opinion? This may be a fun series to watch, but just because they call it Perry Mason doesn’t make it PERRY MASON.

I agree. I know Perry Mason, and you sir, are not Perry Mason.

Looks closer to the early Mason novels. And as much as I liked Raymond Burr, Gardner’s Mason was not a fat guy.

Apparently He was Gardner’s idea of Perry Mason because Burr was selected by him

That’s the story as I’ve heard it too. But as Steve O says, Perry Mason himself changed over the years. Burr may have been how Gardner envisioned him the late 50s, but in the mid-30s, Mason was a lot leaner and tougher. At least that’s how I picture him when I read those early books.

Fred MacMurray was first choice for Mason and he turned them down; is there anyone other than me who sees Burr playing MacMurray’s part? Because I do. Not about looks, although Raymond was actually quite good looking, but warmth and personality almost always carry the day.

My real objection other than beyond name this has virtually no connection to Gardner is that it is by way of an origin of Mason before he became “the” Perry Mason, but in the first Gardner novel Perry is established and a highly successful defense attorney in his thirties, and this guy is 45 and looks it.
Fine actor, he was great in THE AMERICANS, but a scruffy middle aged Mason in a fedora and overcoat in need of a shave just doesn’t seem very Perry Mason to me.
On the other hand if he was a generic lawyer/private eye I would be greatly looking forward to it. I’m just sorry they felt they had to tag it as Perry Mason.
What next, Charlie Chan Master of Kung Fu.
