I have the feeling I just heard this recently (for the first time) somewhere on TV. Murder, She Wrote? PBS? Don’t know…
It certainly sums up the art of writing clearly for me. The source where I found it attributed it to Wm Howard Taft, so if so, it’s been around for a long time.
On TV it was attributed to Taft, too.
It’s good advice.
