Any stock broker can affirm that when the market went digital, many careers were killed. Brokers used to found their careers on the ‘loose change’ of trading.
Today there’s vociferous debate about going even further –experts quaddle as to whether all “small change” should be rescinded. What would the effect on the economy be if all payments were rounded up to the nearest hundredth? It’s a vexing issue.
Proponents point out that it costs the US government ridiculous amounts of labor –far in excess of the metal itself –to mine, mint, and distribute the Lincoln 1-cent penny. They have a cogent point. Why do so, considering that the coin only ends up where it came from?
