I say that with my fingers crossed, since I haven’t tested everything, but with only a few casualties, the recent outage crisis for the blog is over. What had to be done was a full restore to the blog going back to before the problem arose. That seems to have done the trick.
Missing, though, are all of the posts that appeared here after Tuesday of last week. I made backups of those, though, and they will all appear again as soon as I can get to them. The bad news is that any comments that were left for those most recent posts are gone forever.
This is better news than I was anticipating, though, as one possible outcome for the restore operation was that the posts would all come back, but ALL of the comments left for the blog since its inception would have disappeared. That would have been a loss awfully hard to take.
So that’s the news for now. I’ll get to work replacing the missing posts as soon as I can.

Many thanks for your efforts Steve.

Yikes, Steve…grr. Alas all software (or was it more hardware?). As you’ve probably seen by now, the current setup also freaks out at apostrophes in post titles.
Much better luck in the future.

Worse, spinach in the texts, too.

Todd, I hadn’t noticed the screwed up apostrophes in the titles, and you’re rights. The spinach problem has crept in some of the posts as well, hopefully only a limited number, as T think any corrections are going to have to be made (ugh) manually.
I’ll get right on it.

From this end, I’ve think (hope) the word salad problem has been fixed. It seems to have affected only the posts from the last two weeks, the ones that haven’t disappeared on me, and I believe everything is clear and clean now.
Do keep an eye out for stray problems, though, and Todd, thanks for being the first to let me know about it.

I spoke too soon. The problem extends further back than I thought. What I don’t understand is how hit-or-miss it is. Looks like a longer job than I thought, just like the long list of missing images that occurred the last time something like this happened (and I’m still working on). So far, all things considered, it’s easier to fix this time.
Still not a lot of fun, though.

No, indeed…all sympathies (Blogspot did a massive kluge about a decade back that required a Whole Lot of reformatting).
And you’re quite welcome. Hope it goes quickly.

Hang in there, Steve! Software problems take time to fix.

Mystery*File was down for three days. You’re right. It had something to do with the underlying database where comments are stored. (Or at least that’s how I understand it.) If it hadn’t been for my son-in-law Mark, it would still be down, probably for good.

Steve, Mark deserves a wonderful Lunch as a reward!
