Mystery Stories I’m Reading: DOUG ALLYN “The Hate Tapes.”

DOUG ALLYN “The Hate Tapes.” Published in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, March 2010. Not known to have been collected or reprinted.

Murph, the leading protagonist in this all-too-short short story, is the guitarist and lead singer for a rock band named the Kurves. You may not have known about them before, but at one time they were one of the hottest bands in the country. Time has passed, as it always does, and the Kurves are playing in much smaller venues now, but the crowds who come are still rocking.
But one concert, this one in Detroit before bussing off to Cincinnati, has an extra. A dead man, and no one is surprised more than Murph when he discovers that he knows him – a nondescript fellow who follows the band avidly whenever they hit the Motor City. None of the members of the band are suspects – they were all on stage when the killing happened – but the police sergeant in charge of the investigation – a feisty young woman named Rose Morales — decides Murph will be useful in connecting with the people who may be involved, and the ins and out of the music business.
It takes a while, but they’re soon working like a team who’s been at it together for a while. The case involves music tapes, and names like Jimi Hendrix an Janis Joplin come up. The story’s too short for there to be a lot of clues, but what there is is choice. Allyn knows his way around the rock business, and with that in his background, it makes this one a lot of fun to read.

A wonderful author that seems to have specialized in short stories, with several being nominated or winning awards. Many featuring veterinarian David Westbrook (also one novel). He had a couple of early novels featuring Michelle Mitchell that were set in Michigan that were well done.

Allyn is one of my top 5 mystery short story writers. He is always worth reading.

Allyn is the same age I am, so I imagine he’s retired now, but I see he was still writing (and publishing) as of the middle of last year. Short stories, of course, that’s what he’s best known for. Lots of awards, including an Edgar, maybe two.

Allyn has won two Edgars and a Robert Fish Award for his short stories, as well as a Macavity, two Derringers, and an astounding nine Ellery Queen Reader awards. He probably has garnered many more honors but Wikipedia does not seem to have the room to list them, nor all his well-deserved nominations for major awards. I do know the, in an alternate universe, he has received both the Steve Lewis and the Jeff Meyerson Awards for Pretty Darned Good Writer, and most likely from a gazillion others.

Double down on that, Jerry. And thanks for providing us with a list of all the awards he’s won and (I also suspect) all of the nomination he’s earned for the stories he’s written.
I have gotten to wondering why Allyn never wrote another story with the two leading players of this one. They seem to gave gotten along well, and the ending suggests that there may have been a future for them, but if there was, there just wasn’t a story behind it. Just like real life, I suppose.

I have found a Wikipedia article for Allyn, but it’s in French. But the titles of much of his work and the awards he’s gotten or nominated for are in English, so that’s helpful:

And Google translate is one’s friend. (Albeit the short-form translator defaulted to Spanish, which was fine as my halting Spanish is much better than my scraps of French–the fuller translation page was more accommodating).
